This downloadable PostScript OCR font was developed to allow Naval Messages, Officer Fitness Reports, and Enlisted Evaluations to be printed using a Macintosh and a LaserWriter. I take no credit for the actual font design since it was copied from an IBM Selectric typing element. It has been tested on four different Optical Character Readers located in two Naval Telecommunications Centers and seems to work fine. Here are some instructions for its installation and use:
1 - Use the Font/DA Mover to install the bitmap version of the font (it's the one with the suitcase icon) into System on your startup disk.
2 - Copy the PostScript version of the font (it's the one with the LaserWriter icon) into the System Folder on your startup disk. (Just drag it into the folder). NOTE: DO NOT rename this PostScript font file or it will not be correctly recognized and downloaded.
3 - Now you can use any Word Processor which supports the fractional width table to print such as Microsoft Word 3.01, or WriteNow (MacWrite 4.6 doesn't work). Just select the *OCR font from your font menu (be sure to use 12pt.) and start typing. When you are ready to print, be SURE to choose "Fractional Widths" in Word, or "Use Printer Spacing" in WriteNow for the font to print correctly. If you do not, the spaces between the characters will not be correct. The PostScript version of the font will automatically be downloaded to the LaserWriter, the document printed, and the font removed from the memory of the LaserWriter. It's as simple as that.
